Antzela Dimitriou was born in the popular suburbs of Athens. From her early years on, she was deeply in contact, through members of her family, with the Greek music imported by the refugees from Asia Minor, a kind of mixture between oriental and western sounds and rhythms. Then, she shyly started to present herself and her talent in the small bars and clubs of Piraeus, the harbor of Athens.
Immediately, her deep voice and the way she was singing well-known songs of the Greek musical tradition astonished the public. This made well-known legendary singers ask her to work together with them.
Starting her recording career in 1980, she is considered one of the most dynamic female Greek singers. Her shows and live appearances are catchy and the Lebanese press, after her show in Beyrouth, in 1995, nicknamed her "the Greek Tina Turner".
Antzela is a versatile singer, mixing traditional music with pop influences. She has worked with great composers, not hesitating to lend her voice to more experimental sessions. Antzela Dimitriou is also appreciated in her native country for the way she sings the "zeïbekiko", a dance-song quite heavy, on a 9/8, or 9/4 rhythm, mainly danced in a solo manner by men.
In 1997, through the song "Margarites", she hit many Arabian Top-10 hit lists, becoming the best selling Greek artist in the Arabic language countries. One of her highlights was the show in the Forum of Beyrouth in January of 1998, with Rachid Taha as support act, the day the Ramadan ended, in front of an audience of 10.000 people. In May, 1999, she worked together with Amr Diab, whom she always had admired for his talent and his view on the mixture of several kinds of Mediterranean music, on her latest album "Kane stin akri", but also on Amr's album "Amarain".
2000 was another smash year for Antzela Dimitriou. Her “best of” album reached triple platinum status in Turkey, in 6 months. All her concerts were sold out in the same country, after having been elected “best-selling EMI foreign artist”, in 1998, and in 1999, for Lebanon and the Gulf countries.
